Team Selection Steps for Youth Sports in the Recreation Leagues
Review coaches evaluations of players in a listing from A (highest) to E (lowest).
Make adjustments to gross errors.
Make up a list of coaches and assistants. Must have enough head coaches for
all teams before the selection process can begin.
Mark the head coaches children's forms with a BLUE marker to distinguish
them from other players. For head coaches without a sibling, the YMCA will
assign a player to make sure the number of players is the same on each team.
Mark the assistant coaches children's forms with a RED marker to distinguish
them from other players.
Mark players with sponsorship considerations with a GREEN marker to
distinguish them from other players.
Make sure "twins" are together, and players who will be playing up a division are
in their correct place.
Sort the players from A (highest) to E (lowest).
Sort the unevaluated players by years of experience.
Determine the number of teams for each age division.
For single year age divisions: Distribute players from highest to lowest
evaluation, then add unevaluated players by years of experience. Make sure
each team has only 1 (one) head coach and sponsor, and and assistants are
as evenly distributed as possible.
For divisions with more than 1 (one) age group together: Distribute the highest
evaluated players to lowest evaluated players in the oldest age division.
Distribute the next oldest age division from highest evaluated players to lowest
evaluated players in inverse order. Distribute the unevaluated players by most to
least experience in oldest to youngest divisions as in above.
For basketball, check the the height of the players in U-12 and above.

Our Youth Basketball Recreation League plays in the winter(one season per year). The
teams are re-selected prior to each season. The coaches evaluate their players at the end of
every season and these evaluations are used to put all of the teams together the next season.
Our Youth Soccer Recreation League plays in the Fall and Spring(two seasons per year).
The teams are re-selected before the Fall season and stay together for both the Fall and
Spring seasons. New players are added to the Spring teams to make up for any non-returning
players from the Fall season. The coaches evaluate their players at the end of the spring
season and these evaluations are used to put all of the teams together the next Fall season.
Between the Fall and Spring seasons we look at how the teams finished in the Fall and add
players in the Spring trying to balance out the teams equally.

Our Mission: A worldwide charitable fellowship united by a common loyalty to Jesus Christ for the purpose of helping persons grow in spirit, mind and body.
